Beauty pageant helps veterans

If one of your goals is to contribute to organizations that aid American veterans, you’ll be glad to know you can do that and have fun at the same time. The American Legion Auxiliary Mr. and Miss USA fundraising beauty pageant will be held in the banquet hall of American Legion Post 471 at 950 Gallia Street in Portsmouth on Sunday, July 24 at 3 p.m.

The event is being hosted by the Auxiliary unit 471 and the proceeds will go to veterans programs in Ohio. All ages are invited to participate.

There is a $20 entry fee and (optional) 5 categories at $2 each. If you wish you can obtain a sponsor for the entry fee that would make it free for your child or children. All the children will get a trophy, sash, and certificates. Admission for spectators is a donated school supply item which will be given to a local school for kids who many not have the supplies needed.

“The funds usually go to our charities,” Betty Taylor of the Post 471 Auxiliary said. “Last year’s focus was homeless veterans. This year it is serving Ohio soldiers.”

Applications are available on Facebook where they can be printed off, at Post 471, or by calling Betty Taylor at 740-250-3249. The deadline for applications is July 18.
