Potter’s House Health Fair is Tuesday

When you can get help with monitoring your health and advice from people who are experts in that field and when it’s all free, you should probably mark your calendar. The Potter’s House Community Health Fair is Tuesday, July 19 from 9 a.m. until noon.

This will be the third year for the event, hosted by Compass Community Health Care and the Potter’s House Ministry, offering free screenings, education and activities for anyone in the community.

“We set up in the parking lot next to the Potter’s House (5409 Winchester Ave., Sciotoville),” Sonie Hash Program Manager at Compass said. “We’re going to have some screenings and health information, and we’ve invited some partners to join us from some of the payers.”

The OU Mobile Medical unit will do glucose readings. Amy France and her students at the Shawnee State University Therapy department will offer education on COPD, lung health and tobacco cessation.

Two nurses from Southern Ohio Medical Center, Dawn and Ashley, will be offering advice on healthful food choices.

“SOMC has a pretty wonderful community health department,” Hash said. “So, Dawn and Ashley are two nurses that work in that department, and they will come and help educate people about making healthy choices. They’re going to focus on caffeine and sugar. A lot of of the soft drinks that people drink have a ton of sugar and people don’t realize it until they see it visually.”

The OSU Extension service will educate people on sun and skin damage, or on a healthy plate initiative.

Taking part in the health fair are United Health Care; CareSource; Compass Community Health Care Center with blood pressure screens and medication review with their pharmacist Andy Pierron; Beth Dunlap of Compass Outreach and Enrollment; the Scioto County Health Coalition; Andrea Queen of the Counseling Center and Loved Ones Group; District 7 of the Area Agency on Aging and Potter’s House Ministries.

“We generally have a great time,” Hash said. “Since this is our third year we’re starting to see some people that we know and they know us and that’s a good thing. We’re hoping for good weather this year. Last year we rescheduled because of rain. This year it’s rain or shine, we’re going to be there.”

Gina Collinsworth, director community relations and development, said getting the word out for the event has been a team effort.

“This is the third year for our free health fair hosted at the Sciotoville Potter’s House Ministries and so many organizations are helping to get the work out to all in the community, about the event,” Collinsworth said “Everyone is welcome. Groups including Cornerstone United Methodist Church, the National Church Registry’s Washington House and Biggs House, All Saints Church Loaves and Fishes Community Dinner and workers at Second Presbyterian Church God’s Pantry will all be distributing flyers about the event.”

Collinsworth said if any group or agency would like to join their contact list, they can call Community Relations’ Jennifer at 740-354-3829, extension 2709 for more information.

“We also can report we have more agencies joining us including the Ohio River Valley chapter of the Red Cross and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program,” Collinsworth said. “It’s going to be a great day for healthy fun.”
