Staff report

PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth Police Department has been investigating an incident that occurred in the 800 block of 6th Street on Monday Oct. 25, 2021, at approximately 6:50 p.m.

On Monday, Oct. 25, 2021, at approximately 6:50 p.m. Portsmouth Dispatch Center received several calls of a female screaming in the 800 block of 6th street. Callers advised that they saw a male close the door to the van and drive off. Callers were concerned that the screaming female had been abducted and was placed in the van that they saw leaving the area. Witnesses later located the van, unoccupied, parked in the 900 block of 4th street.

This call has resulted in videos being shared on social media and further witnesses have been identified and come forward. Officers have located additional surveillance video of this van. After a thorough investigation, the owner of the van has been identified and located.

The results of the investigation determined that the wife of the van owner has severe dementia. After having dinner at a local restaurant, the male was helping his wife into the van when she had a severe outburst. This outburst was caused by her dementia. The screaming outburst is what witnesses heard. The male was able to get his wife into the van and she calmed down, enough so that they were able to attend the Oak Ridge Boys Concert that was held at the Vern Riffe Center.

The Portsmouth Police Department would like to extend our appreciation to those witnesses who called 911 and who helped locate the van in question.
