Pike Co. mourns the loss of teen

The Pike County community is mourning the loss of a teenage resident.

Fourteen-year-old Daniel Shelpman passed away Tuesday afternoon despite the efforts of emergency response personnel.

Pike County Sheriff Charles S. Reeder said his office received a call from the Ross County Sheriff’s Office requesting them to send EMS and deputies to a residence at 1525 Davis Road in reference to a 14-year-old boy that was non-responsive.

Pike County Sheriff’s Office dispatch then alerted Pike County Squad Station 1 and deputies. Pike County Squad 3 and 8, along with a member of Squad 7 responded to the scene as did Pike County deputies, Reeder and Pike County Coroner David Kessler.

After efforts to provide CPR were exhausted, shelpman was prounounced dead at 12:51 p.m.

During the course of the investigation, the county coroner ruled the death as caused by an ongoing medical condition.

Reeder and his staff took the opportunity to extend their condolences to the Shelpman familyu, community, the students and staff at the Western Local School District and pastors Bonnie and Ronnie Lindsey and the congregation of Freedom Road Baptist Church where Shelpman was a member.
