Dresses for a purpose, helps local kids

As the season changes from Winter to Spring, area high school students will often turn their attention to prom. Prom can be very expensive, when it comes to finding a suite, a dress or anything associated.

In 2015 Melissa Galindo Miguel started Dresses for a Purpose.

“Dresses for a purpose is collecting dresses and suits from the community, that can be given to area students that otherwise might not be able to afford them for prom,” Miguel said. “Dresses for a purpose is a program designed to mend broken spirits and rebuild hope by giving Prom/formal dresses away to girls in the community that cannot afford one.”

An event was held over the weekend allowing girls to choose from the available dresses. Once a dress was chosen, they then traveled to various stations to have their hair, makeup and other things done in preparation for prom.

There were a number of volunteers that helped Minguel with the event at Shawnee State University.

When asked what the availability of these dresses meant to the girls, that would be wearing them Minguel said, “these dresses will mean a lot. One mother messaged me yesterday, so thrilled we were having this event. She did not know what she was going to do to get her daughter a dress.”

She said if there are dresses still available, appointments can be made with her to show what’s available.

Miguel said, she accepts donations of dresses all-year-long, in anticipation of the next giveaway.
