GREENUP COUNTY, Ky. — Greenup County 4-H will provide an opportunity for families to engage in activities in the great outdoors by hosting the 4-H Fishing Derby on Saturday, July 11, at the boat dock area of Greenbo Lake State Resort Park. Registration is from 8 a.m. -8:30 a.m.

Aaron Boyd, Greenup County 4-H agent, said the Fishing Derby allows kids and all participants to have an opportunity to learn and experience nature simultaneously.

“The Fishing Derby is a nice way to get the kids out, and allows them to learn about their surroundings, to learn about nature. Its good to develop those types of hobbies like that to get the kids outside, and get them exercise, and encourages healthy living,” Boyd said. “They also get to learn more about science and natural resources through fishing. It helps them to appreciate the world around them. The kids come in the morning and fish from 9 until 11 a.m. and then come back in and weigh in the fish. We will have some lunch for them, and play some games, have some door prizes and things like that.”

Fishing (from shore only, no boats) is from 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. with a Casting Contest and weigh-in from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Lunch and prize presentations will begin at 12:30 p.m.

Age categories are eight and under, ages nine-10, ages 11-13 and ages 14-18. Contests include a Casting Contest, Single Biggest Fish by Weight, Most Weight Overall (Total of all caught) and Longest Fish.

Greenup County 4-H encourages the public to bring their families for a great day of fishing and fun. For more information contact the Greenup County Extension Office at 606-836-0201.
