FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. — State highways in the Kentucky Transportion Cabinet (KYTC) District 9 are are expected to improve with rising temperatures, making salt treatment more effective. The region was impacted by as much as six inches of snow accummulation overnight.

Allen Blair, public information officer of KYTC District 9, said highway crews will remain in place overnight.

“Most of the main routes are clear. There is some slush out there still,” Blair said. “Right now our crews are working on the secondary routes, and don’t forsee any problems with cleaning up our routes today. Our concerns are refreezing tonight, so we will maintain crews in that area. “It looks like may get some additional snow, so crews will be in place over night.”

As it pertains to KYTC District 9 salt supply, Blair said still have an ample supply.

“We still have quite a lot,” he said. “I believe we had 18,000 tons of salt across ten counties, and our salt supply is in good shape still, and we continue to receive shipments of salt during the winter, so we don’t have any worries about salt supplies.”

As of 11 a.m., main Priority A routes such as I-64, US 23, US 60, KY 32, KY 11, US 68, the AA Highway, etc., are clear and wet with isolated slush. Lesser-traveled Priority B and C routes vary from slushy or partly covered to mostly covered, according to Blair. The secondary routes are clearing as crews continue to plow and treat roadways. Both air and pavement temperatures are above freezing.

He also said flooding could possibly be a challenge for areas in the region.

“Another issue that we may face is, if we get some heavy rain with all of the snow and snow melt there could be some localized flooding ,” he said. “So we are going to watching out for high water, so we will put signs out to warn motorists as well.”

Motorists are advised to take precautions for both snowy and rainy conditions, which would consist of driving slowly, leaving extra driving distance between vehicle, and watching for ice on bridges and valleys during snowstorms. Motorists are also advised never drive through high water.
