Vanceburg man sentenced for murder

VANCEBURG, Ky. —A Vanceburg man has pleaded guilty to murder during a pre-trial conference in Greenup County Circuit Court.

John Garcia, 25, of Vancebug, Ky., pled to the murder charge Thursday in court.

Garcia appeared in the courtroom of Greenup County Circuit Judge Robert B. Conley on Thursday, and pleaded guilty to fatal stabbing of David Reed which occurred in February of 2014.

Court officials told The Daily Times that Garcia waived a separate sentencing hearing, was sentenced to 25 years in prison, of which he must serve 20 years of the sentence before eligibility for parole would be granted.

On Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014, at approximately 12:23 a.m. Lewis County deputies responded to 265 Meadowbrook Drive to investigate reports that an individual had been murdered. Reed’s body was discovered by officers at the residence with multiple stabbing wounds, and pronounced dead by Lewis County Coroner Tony Gaydos.

Garcia was located near the scene, and he was taken into custody by officers without incident.

Garcia is currently in custody in the Lewis County Detention Center, and will later be transported to the Kentucky State Men’s Reformatory to begin his sentence.
