KofC donates Coats for Kids

Dozens more children will have a much warmer winter thanks to a donation of new coats made Wednesday by the Knights of Columbus (KofC) to Catholic Social Services.

“We are presenting Catholic Social Services with Coats for Kids,” Randy Creech, general secretary with the Knights of Columbus, said. “It’s one of our programs that we have through the Knights of Columbus. We asked our membership for donations and we were able to purchase four boxes of coats in various sizes for boys and girls. It is just part of our way of giving back to the community.”

Creech said each box contained a dozen coats for a total of 48 coats to be distributed

“We decided we would let Catholic Social Services distribute the coats because they know the people that are in need of it,” Creech said. “They can see to it that the right people get the coats.”

The groups gathered at the monastery in Portsmouth to make the presentation.

“It will go to people who are in need, who come in and say their child doesn’t have a coat,” Barbara McKenzie of Catholic Social Services said. “Then we will be able to help that family get a coat for that child.”

Creech said the Coats for Kids project is new this year, but he hopes it will continue in the year ahead.

“We have different levels that we can attain in our organization,” Creech said. “We’re trying to become a Star Council. Only two percent of all of the councils all over the world get that and we are really close and we are on our way to becoming a Star Council.”

Creech said anyone wanting to make a donation to the KofC for their community work, can do so by stopping in to their club house on Gallia Street, mail the donation to Post Office Box 187, Portsmouth, Ohio 45662 or go to any of the local Catholic parishes and give them a donation. That money will find its way to the KofC.
