Negotiations continue at OSCO

Work and negotiations continue at OSCO Industries in Portsmouth.

Rumors over the weekend were that a strike had occurred at the plant, but Ryan Burke, President of OSCO Industries says those rumors are not true.

“They (union) had a vote last Friday and they voted ‘no’ on the contract,” Burke told the Daily Times. “So we are getting back together this week to have discussions.”

Workers at the plant are members of the Glass Moulders and Potters Union International. The GMP represents thousands of workers in the glass, molders, plastics, pottery, cast metals, fiberglass, defense, fine china, glass and plastic containers, insulation and sanitary-ware industries as well as workers in government, healthcare and a variety of other industries.

Burke said the current contract is in effect through the end of January.

Burke became president of the corporation at the start of the new year and has immediately become involved in labor talks, but says he is undaunted by the challenge.

“Obviously it hasn’t started out the best way,” Burke said. “But it’s fine. We expect to get this resolved.”

OSCO Industries, Inc. consists of three casting plants, which are located in Portsmouth, New Boston and Jackson. The major markets served are air conditioning and refrigeration, automotive, power transmission equipment, pumps and valves.
