Cinema 8 reaches out to community

PORTSMOUTH — Portsmouth 8 Cinema hosted a Breakfast With Santa and Gift-Giving party on Dec. 28, at the cinema location in Portsmouth. Children were granted the opportunity to partake in a breakfast meal, and receive a gift on that day.

Tammy McGuire, a manager at Portsmouth 8 Cinemas, said the Cinema’s goal was to share with the community.

“On December 28th we decided to do something more for our community, we feel like we do quite a bit here, but we wanted to do more,” McGuire said. “We wanted to help some children who may not have the best of Christmases and to teach our younger staff that work here about community service as well. We were able to get a list of names from an associate in the community and we set it up to host a Breakfast With Santa and Gift-Opening party for the kids after Christmas.”

Tom Euton, general manager of Portmouth 8 Cinema, said they enjoyed seeing the childrens’ responses to the gifts, and to getting the workers engaged in serving the community.

“We are really glad to be able to do this for the community, it was a great time for all. It was wonderful to see the children get so excited to see Santa Claus show up, and the giving of the gifts went exceptionally well,” Euton said. “Our workers that came to help out with it were so excited about being involved. They came in and served the breakfast, and they loved seeing the kids get the gifts. We did have a few that did not show up, so our workers took those presents and throughout the week and gave them to them to two other children that came in with their parents, and I am sure that made their day.”

Euton also said through the event they were also able to do some random acts of kindness to benefit residents at the Scioto County Homeless Shelter.

“After the event we had plenty of pancakes and sausage left over so we decided to load up my truck and take it and donate it to the local homeless shelter for the residents there,” Euton said. “So we were glad to be able to do that as well. This is something that we are definitely looking forward to doing in this new year, we want to always find ways to give back to the community, and to try to make a difference.”
