Despite cold and rainy weather, spirits were high in downtown Portsmouth as community leaders and residents gathered for the official groundbreaking of the Sleep Inn/MainStay Suites Hotel.

At the building site of the future hotel, corners of Washington, 2nd and 3rd Streets, those behind the project came together to break ground and initiate the build phase of the multi-story building. Dozens of community leaders were in attendance at the ceremony, which began at 2 p.m., to show their support for the new project.

“I’m excited not only for City Council and Portsmouth, I’m excited for the area residents. There will be lots of jobs available when this is constructed. I like whenever Portsmouth has new things because that shows that we’re going in the right direction,” said Portsmouth City Councilman Andrew McManus.

All three Scioto County Commissioners were present at the ceremony, and Commissioner Bryan Davis said he hopes to see the hotel bring in more business and tourism to Scioto County.

“It excites me, I know how much work went into this and getting it to the point that it’s at. And it’s so wonderful to see progress coming to Portsmouth, seeing investment in our community,” said Davis. “It’s so exciting to see all the folks here supporting this. This will be the first tall building built in Portsmouth in many decades. It’s a real testimony that our community is on the way up, and good things are happening. I’m hoping that this will be a catalyst to see more happen not just here but all the way throughout the county. We’re excited about it, I’m excited to see Ed [Newsome, Co-Developer] and his investment group get where they are. This is going to be a great addition to our downtown community.”

The 77 room hotel is expected to open in the fall of 2020.

“I’m very excited for this project. It’s been a number of years since we’ve had anything this size that’s privately owned in our city. There’s obviously a need for it. I’m just very excited to get it open this fall,” said Rick Morgan, local business owner.

The Sleep Inn / MainStay Suites – Portsmouth is owned by Brighter Vision Group, LP of Portsmouth and managed by Nivea Hospitality and Classic Management Solutions.
