The 1810 House is gearing up the Christmas holiday. Volunteers recently gathered at the home located at 1926 Waller Street in Portsmouth to make the home festive, and to prepare for the open house to be held Sunday, Dec. 13, from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m.

Dorothy Justus, volunteer at the 1810 House, said they look forward to hosting the annual open house event.

“Every year we do this,we will be serving hot cider, and light refreshments. We will be dressed for Christmas with a candle light, and so we will be using all of our candles,” Justus said. “People need to remember that everything in the house is old, and everything is supposed to be before 1946, but we sometimes have to purchase rugs, or decorations, and our decorations are more modern usually.”

For a thorough tour of the 1810 House, Justus suggests visiting on other Sundays as well.

“We would also like the public to remember that we are open on other Sundays, it is just that one day near Christmas that we host the open house, but if they really wanted to see the House better, it is better to come on those other Sundays,” she said. “Last year during the open house we had 60 in two hours. So you will just get to wander through, but if you come and let a guide take you, you will get more out of it.”

She said the 1810 House used to offer tours on Saturdays and Sundays, but due to lack of volunteers, are only able to be open on Sundays.
