Compass Community Health will continue its health awareness through the Natural High campaign next week, with the Natural High Fitness Festival Zumba.

The event is part of a larger picture, but bad weather in October forced Compass to postpone this particular section of the celebration. While it would be easier to forget that single event, Melissa Whitt, of Compass Community Health, said the organization is too dedicated to health awareness to drop a positive activity for the community.

“We really understand the need of keeping this portion of the event, knowing the community is extremely large and this is enjoyed by all. We wanted to make sure every different fitness enthusiast has the opportunity to participate in the event,” she said.

Whitt said the event draws a lot of attention and she hopes this segment is as successful as the October event.

“The excitement and hype was there and going strong at the October 3 event, so we hope we can still grab that attention and get them to participate next week,” Whitt said.

Debbie Kielmar, of Southern Ohio Medical Center, will lead the Zumba event. Whitt said that the event is open to people of all different levels of experience, from beginner to experienced.

“Zumba is a wonderfully fun, high-energy and let loose, type of event,” Whitt said. “People of all experience levels can enjoy what is going on,” Whitt said.

The event will also have informational booths from different programs around the area.

Some of the informational booths include the Portsmouth City Health Department, who will have flu shots available; Shawnee Mental Health will be giving information on health, hope and healing; a display on healthy eating will be erected; a reiki therapist will be providing information; and more.

Proceeds from the event will benefit The Counseling Center’s Summer Outreach Club.

“We have been doing this program for 25 years. Kids from all over Scioto County can participate in a nine week program during the summer. We take them to the pool, to the library, and to the museum,” Whitt said. “We have several community partners that volunteer their time to work with and mentor the kids.”

Thanks to the fundraising efforts, participants of the Summer Outreach Club do not have to pay for activities.

Natural High Zumba will be at the 14th Street Community Center on November 17 at 5:30 p.m. Pre-sale tickets are available for $10 and general admission is $15. More information, and tickets, are available by reaching out to Whitt at 740-354-3829.
