Sierra’s Haven for New and Used Pets have partnered with Glockner Family of Dealerships and ‘83 Sweets to offer free pets for area veterans. Any member of the American Armed Forces can qualify for a free pet.

The shelter has had a long relationship with the Glockner Family in sponsoring the Pets for vets program.

The event will be held Nov. 11 at Sierra’s Haven, 80 Easter Drive in Portsmouth, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

According to program information, pets are a great source of socialization as well as a great addition to families. A dog can help with daily exercise and help bring meaning to daily life.

“Glockner sponsored this last year on Veterans Day and it was successful,” said Julie Blackburn, a Board of Director’s member of Sierra’s Haven.

Blackburn said a fund has been established at Sierra’s Haven to cover the adoption fees for a veteran wishing to adopt an animal.

She said to promote the program, the shelter will hold various events throughout the year with community partners to highlight the program.

Blackburn said the Pets for Vets fund can accept donations from those interested in helping area veterans receive animals.

Those veterans interested in a pet need to bring with them a military ID or discharge papers.
