“Pollinators of Pike County” is the theme of Pike Soil and Water Conservation District for 2015 and a photo contest in underway as a part of that theme. Mary Sibole of the Pike SWCD said the district is looking for that great photo of pollinators in Pike County. She said participants can live outside of the county but the photo has to be taken in Pike County.

Sibole said the district will accept photos until July 1, 2015 and those photos may be emailed to [email protected]. On the subject line, those entering the contest should put “photo contest.” She said photos may also be dropped off at the office located at 11752 State Route 104 in Waverly.

“The purpose of the contest is to make people aware of how important pollination is for our daily lives,” Sibole said. “When pollinators shrink in number, many plants either produce less seed or no seed at all. The bottom line is, when pollinators start disappearing, plants start disappearing. Most plants depend upon pollinators to reproduce. While animals can travel and move around to find mates and reproduce, plants are rooted to one spot. Therefore, plants depend on pollinators to move pollen from their anthers to their stigma.”

The first place winner will receive $75 plus a ticket to the Pike SWCD annual meeting in September. Second place will receive $50 and a ticket to the meeting and third place $25 and a ticket to the annual meeting.

“The annual meeting is where we honor our contest winners, and show projects the district has accomplished over the year. The public is made aware of what the district does for the community,” Sibole said. “A lot of people have no idea that we sell rain barrels for $35 to help conserve the run off of rain. We have in stock nesting boxes for the wildlife. We also vote for our Board of Supervisors at the meeting. They are elected for a 3-year non-paid term. It is important to get good Board members that want to be active in the community.”

She said all photos entered will be the property of the Pike SWCD to use in promotional advertisement if needed.
