Wheelersburg Baptist Church in conjunction with Portsmouth’s nonprofit CRADLE organization plans to present Mark Shaw, founder of Truth in Love ministries and author of numerous books and publications dealing with Christian and -based counseling on a wide variety of topics.

Shaw is a certified as a counselor on the topic of addictions by the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors. He will appear 6-9 p.m. Dec. 3 at the Wheelersburg church, 11712 Gallia-Pike Rd.

The nondenominational event is free and open to the public. Prior to Shaw’s talk or seminar, the church plans a sort of luncheon meeting with Shaw and local pastors. Wheelersburg Baptist Church Pastor Brad Brandt said that event is open to all local ministers. Brandt himself has been a Biblical counselor for 20 years.

Brandt and Denise Haney-Hurley, who chairs the board of directors for CRADLE (Christ Centered Resources in Difficult Life Experiences,) said Shaw will speak mostly on Christian and Biblically-based solutions to addiction and related problems. Haney-Hurley said that issue seems especially topical and pertinent to the Scioto County area.

“We took a look around,” Brandt said. “And we asked ourselves, ‘How do we help people whose lives are stricken with drugs and alcohol?’”

Located on Gallia Street, CRADLE advertises itself as a pregnancy care center helping women in southern Ohio and northern Kentucky by offering free pregnancy tests, post abortion counseling/abortion alternative counseling, infant clothing and supplies for newborns to children two years of age, parenting videos and education and, perhaps most importantly to their central mission, Biblically-based counseling and Bible studies.

Brandt described Shaw as a very much sought-after expert on Christian and Biblical means of dealing with drugs and alcohol abuse.

“There are faith-based answers to those problems,” Brandt said. He further talked about how the church would welcome anyone interested in the topic from the tri-state area adding the ministry of CRADLE obviously focuses on women and mothers and they are perhaps especially invited.

Persons needing further information or pastors or ministers wishing to attend the luncheon with Shaw can call the Wheelersburg church at (740) 574- 5116. You can find information on Shaw on the Truth in Love ministry website,
