A third location of Weaver’s Gas & Oil, Inc. is now open for business in West Portsmouth.
While the business’s other two locations operate as gas station convenience stores, the Rusty Cork is a business venture blazing an entirely new trail by offering beer, wine and other spirits. According to owner Dee Cox, customers would ask on a daily basis where they could purchase various alcoholic beverages and after acquiring the property to build a new store, asked the voters of Washington Township to vote beer and other adult beverages into the township.
“We would have numerous requests from out of town customers and everyday customers alike that would stop in and ask for beer,” said Cox. “Our other location is very close to the church, so we didn’t want to do that there out of respect for them.”
Cox said the new business first began when she sat down with her husband Bryan and the now late Roger Hall who owned the former Hall’s Gas Station, and worked out a deal to purchase the property. Bryan Cox did the bulk of the work on the renovation, with some work being completed by local contractors.
“We felt this would be a good location to petition for alcohol sales,” said Cox.
Since being open for business just a few short weeks, Cox says the response by customers has been extremely positive. ”We’ve had lots of compliments, it has been very well received,” said Cox. “A lot of the local people that live here are appreciative of the fact that they spend their tax dollars here and the township benefits from that. It’s been very well received by the public.”
Cox wanted to thank the community for their response and says that Weaver’s prides themselves on being involved in the community, by sponsoring various sports teams and individuals.
The Rusty Cork is working on filling different requests for various flavors of wine and widening their selection of craft beers. Unlike the other two locations, The Rusty Cork has a drive thru for customer convenience. Weaver’s Rusty Cork is located at 22878 State Route 73 and open seven days a week, opening at 9 a.m. Monday through Saturday, closing at 11 p.m. Monday-Thursday, midnight on Saturday, and is open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday.
