Businesses in the historic Boneyfiddle District of Portsmouth will be welcoming guests on October 24 to experience their annual day of events dedicated to the fall season known as Falloween.
“Our goal is to get more people in the Boneyfiddle businesses,” Main Street Portsmouth Director Sarah Surina explained. “The Falloween event brings many people into the shops and creates a lot of community pride and interest in that area.”
Surina said the event is also Main Street’s way to further give back to the community members who are looking for something new and interesting to do.
The event will be kicked off with a costume contest for kids and adults at 1 p.m., which will be hosted by Ghosts in the Attic, 518 Second Street.
Trick or treat will be had throughout the day at various participating businesses. Maps of the trick or treat route can be had by visiting Ghosts in the Attic.
Sharon Bender, owner of Ghosts in the Attic, said that she enjoys participating every year, because kids have always flocked to enjoy their spectacles.
“I, myself, won’t be at the event this year,” Bender said,” but I am sure it will be great. We have a lot planned for the kids. I don’t want to give anything away, but we have a spooky, spectacular surprise planned for all of the kids who come.”
Children will also have the opportunity to experience fire trucks, EMS, and other emergency service vehicles firsthand on Court Street between the hours of 1-6 p.m.
When the moon rises and vampires awake, the Portsmouth Public Library will be taking advantage of the dark to present an outdoor movie on Market Street Square at 7:30 p.m. The library will be showing Spookley the Square Pumpkin.
Katie Williams, of the Portsmouth Public Library, said that she is excited to be participating in the event this year and hopes to entertain guests with a film the whole family can enjoy.
“Spookley touches on some anti-bullying themes, which is why we chose it, since October is also National Bullying Prevention Month,” Williams explained. “We wanted to show something family and kid friendly, with the haunted tours going on at the same.”
If weather appears to be unfit for the movie, the showing will be canceled.
As always, the cornerstone of the event is the haunted ghost tours through Boneyfiddle. The tours will be provided between 6:30 and 11p.m. Registration is required and can be done at Vanity Hair Salon, 212 Market Street. Regular tours are $7 and extended tours are $15.
“There are a lot of extra things going on this year that we didn’t have in past years, which I think says something,” Surina said. “I think Halloween is a special time of the year that many people really enjoy, which is evident in all of the new things we’ve been able to add this year.”
From trick-or-treating to ghost tours, Boneyfiddle has something for people of all ages to celebrate the season in style, between the hours of 1 and 11 p.m. For more information on Falloween, contact a Main Street official at 740-464-0203.
