The Federated Democratic Women of Scioto County (FDWSC), gathered for a regular monthly meeting on Monday, Sept. 28, at The River House restaurant in Portsmouth. John Haas, Portsmouth City Solicitor, was the guest speaker for the event.

According to Wendy Jones, current president of FDWSC, the purpose of the organization is to simply promote the cause of the Democratic party. All democrat women and men who believe in the principles of the Democratic Party of Ohio are eligible for membership.

“Tonight, for example, we heard from John Haas who is running for Portsmouth City Solicitor. He told us about his upcoming fundraiser in October,” Jones said. “We voted to endorse him. We also voted to endorse Judge Steve Mowery for Portsmouth Municipal Court Judge, and Ted Strickland for US Senate.”

The Democratic Women meet on the fourth Monday of every month at the River House at 5:15 p.m. for an informal meeting. They support the party by helping to organize and coordinate fundraising events, assist and promote democrat candidates running for office, and promote public awareness of the party and the party’s events, among other things.

Jones said FDWSC will be working in October on their fall banquet, which will convene in November. The type of help that the organization will need for the banquet is with the selling of tickets, decorating, and getting donations for an auction.

Kim Lute currently serves as the treasurer, Rebecca Ratliff is the secretary, and Amber Mershon serves as vice president.

Jones said FDWSC is open to the public, and they are always looking for new members and young people to join us, college students, and extend an invitation to everyone to the table. Official member in FDWSC is not required to attend the month meetings.
