City Council weighs in on waste disposal facility

By Ivy Potter -

The Portsmouth City Council entered into their meeting on Monday evening with a limited agenda, and no legislation up for discussion. Scheduled on the agenda was a discussion on criteria for hiring a City Manager, but the discussion was voted to be moved from the regular session to the City Manager’s conference agenda, immediately following the regularly scheduled meeting. With the City Manager criteria to be discussed at a later time, council moved into the portion of the meeting reserved for remarks on items not on the agenda. Members of the community, and the neighboring community of Piketon, Ohio, both once again shared their concerns with the establishment of the Waste Disposal Facility in Piketon. Opposing those individuals was Dennis Carr, manager of the Piketon Plant who highlighted what he believed to be the positive impacts the plant could bring to Southern Ohio.

During the City Manager’s conference Council ultimately voted in favor of a resolution rejecting the facility.
