The Ohio River Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross has scheduled a kickoff event for the 2016 dancing with our Stars competition. The event is scheduled for Nov. 6 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Elk’s City Club in Portsmouth.

According to promotional material, “Now in its fourth season, Dancing with Our Stars is known for its sell-out crowd and generating funds to support the Red Cross programs in the community. All funds raised support local disaster prevention, preparation and relief, the life-saving training of first aid, CPR/AED classes, collection and testing of blood and blood products, support to military members serving around the globe, the transportation program and international programs.”

Incorporated into this year’s event is a dance competition. Each couple participating in the competition will be given two minutes to perform with the winner determined by audience applause. The winning couple has the opportunity to perform during intermission at the 2016 dancing with our Stars scheduled for March 19, 2016, at the Friend’s Community Center.

The competition is limited to the first ten couples. Interested couples must register with the Red Cross at 740-354-3293 no later than Oct. 28, 2015. Walk-ins at the Kick Off will be limited, if available.

At the event the 2016 dancers will be formally introduced to the community. The dancers include Dr. Jessica Suber of SOMC; singer/song writer Rick Ferrell, Ashley Schwamberger, firefighter with the Portsmouth Fire Department; Tim Wells co-owner of Shawnee Animal Clinic, Ryan Hall, Assistant Vice President WesBanco in Jackson, local dentists Dr. Amy Heim and Dr. Teresa Martin, Chris Keeton, APRN with KDMC Ohio, along with Jessica McGraw, local school teacher and local realtor Nick Rutman.
