If you haven’t visited Main Street Portsmouth’s Farmer’s Market on the Roy Rogers Esplanade in downtown Portsmouth, you have only two more chances to do so — Saturday (Sept. 26) and Oct. 3 from 9 a.m. until noon each day. If you have been a few times, you really need to visit again now because fall is in the air and the Farmer’s Market is right in step with the crisp cool air that permeates our lives this time of year.

October 3 will be Adult Healthy Bucks with KDMC. They will have flu shots available for free to the public. They will also offer a taste test of “Vegged Out Black Bean Soup.” And if you like it, you will be glad to know all the ingredients can be found at the Farmer’s Market.

Features this week include herb plants, handmade herbal soaps, fresh cut flowers and herbs, jam and herb wreaths from Anne Fuhrmann at Appalachian Moon Farm; raw clover honey, bees wax and bees wax candles from Daniel’s Raw Honey. From Hardyman Family Farm, you’ll find beef, free range eggs, baked goods and hot foods. Heather DeAtley will set you up with homemade granola, pizza crust, boules and Baguettes and lemonade.

Mums and daffodil bulbs, cookies, muffins and bread are all available through Laurel DeAtley while Hooples Fruit Farm is offering apples, apple butter, jams and jellies as well as free range chicken eggs. From Otway, Ohio’s Hurricane Run Farm, you’ll find whole wheat, oatmeal bread, cinnamon raisin bread, granola, tomatoes, peppers, wild grape jam and sumac elderberry jelly.

Another feature of the Farmer’s Market is the fresh pork, chicken and goat meat as well as homemade bread, cookies, trail mix, goat milk soap, sugar scrubs, lotion bars and craft items from Rocky Acres Farm. Roxanne Spices offers fresh apple butter, pear butter, jalapeno jelly and soup mixes while Twin Creek Farm will be offering homemade breads, maple syrup and raspberry jam. If watermelon, cantaloupe, bell peppers, eggplant, mums and pumpkin on stick plants sound good, Ways Farms has you covered.

Sarah Surina, director of Main Street Portsmouth, said the Farmer’s Market is a family venue with something for everyone.

“I think it’s great that my kids like to shop at the market and they associate food with the farmers and vendors at the market,” Heather DeAtley said. “When we sit down to dinner they often ask, ‘Are these Ronny’s cucumbers? Is this Way’s corn?’ They even talk about the future sometimes and hope that the market will be around for their kids. I hope so too.”
