A bizarre incident in Sciotoville has ended in an unexplained death. Portsmouth Police are investigating an unexplained death that occurred in the area of Gallia Street and Harding Avenue, in Sciotoville at about 6:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Officers of the department were called to the area of Cline Jenkins Sunoco Station at about 6:36 p.m. to a report of a man having a seizure on the parking lot of the station. Portsmouth Police Operations Captain Lynn Brewer said at 6:37 p.m.. officers received a second call that the man was now throwing things at the window of the business and appeared to be hallucinating that he was on fire.

Upon officers arrival at the scene, the subject, identified as Demetrius Henderson, 36 of West Portsmouth, was found lying on the ground outside the business. Portsmouth Ambulance was also called to respond to the scene. Brewer said they arrived shortly after officers and began emergency medical treatment on Henderson.

Henderson was transported to Southern Ohio Medical Center where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The Scioto County Coroner ordered that Henderson be sent for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

The investigation into Henderson’s death is continuing and anyone with information that may be related to the death is encouraged to call Detective Sergeant Jim Charles of the Portsmouth Police Department at 740-354-1600 or the Police Department Dispatch Center at 740-353-4101.
