The Christmas Season has is well underway in Portsmouth. Though the annual beloved train show has passed, some of the community’s rich traditions are yet to come.
All of the shopping, sweets, festivities and treats, the chill in the air and stories of reindeer, Christmas is certainly a special time. Though the Christmas 2017 schedule is well underway, there are still many events remaining.
These events are a way of celebrating the season by honoring and recognizing the cultural organizations, musical groups, and creative people in the area and putting these talents on display as part of the holiday season festivities. There is something that each member of the community can enjoy.
The Jaycee Christmas Parade and Southern Ohio Medical Center (SOMC) Winter Wonderland activities have commenced, but festive season closer the Oak Ridge Boys are still gearing up for a holiday celebration.
SOMC’s holiday calendar included a Polar Express Pajama Party on Nov. 28 and the annual holiday train show on Nov. 25 and 26.
The pajama party included games and crafts as well as photos with Santa at a cost of only $8 per child. Accompanying adults were free.
Annually dozens come out to display their own local train train sets as children from throughout the community visit the displays and booths. Also a popular part of the annual event, collectors displayed train memorabilia, some of which dates back to the area’s rich train history.
Wonderland events only represent a portion a Portsmouth Christmas. The Holiday Downtown Open House will be from noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 2. The Open House is conducted by Main Street Portsmouth and starts the shopping season by opening the door of downtown businesses, which will be offering refreshments and discounts throughout the day.
