Friday, Temple Tots held their first Community Helper Day, where those who provide important services to the community came to the preschool and told students about the jobs they do.
Portsmouth Sanitation attended and demonstrated their garbage truck. Portsmouth Ambulance gave ambulance tours. Once Upon a Farm LLC. told students about the importance of farming and brought some of their smaller animals for the kids to see. Solid Rock Construction let the kids take a picture in the seat of a Kubota. United States Postal Service talked about the duties of delivering mail, and the Portsmouth Police talked about the importance of the law.
The Portsmouth Fire Department was also in attendance and gave the students a tour of the fire engine and talked about the basics of fire safety. The students of Temple Tots were eager to learn about the duties of each community helper, and were more than happy to climb up into the different vehicles and take a look around at the different equipment that goes along with each job.
Caroline King, administrator at Temple Tots, believes it is important to teach students about the different jobs within the community.
“There are so many negative news stories about our sweet community. We believe the good outweighs the bad,” said King. “We are educating the next generation of community leaders and it starts in preschool. Our classrooms are little communities where every student has a job, where they learn to focus on being helpful and kind. What better way to make that learning meaningful than showing some of our communities finest community helpers. We can change the world when we become the change.”
