Connex offers free family event

Portsmouth Connex is working in conjunction with the St. Mary’s International Festival to offer a free event to the community designed to get young people out and active.

Connex Moves is a family friendly, end of summer event that will include a bike rodeo, scavenger hunt and family bike ride.

“We want to target grade school-aged children through junior high school and high school,” stated Wendi Waugh, administrative director of Southern Ohio Medical Center (SOMC) Cancer Services and Community Health and Wellness. “We are planning a scavenger hunt and community bike ride that will follow the Safety Town and Bike Rodeo set up. All youth that participate in the Safety Town/Bike Rodeo will receive a free helmet, Connex sticker and food coupon for the International Festival.”

Activities are designed to offer something for all ages from youth through adult as well as activities that families can take part in together. There will also be giveaways throughout the event.

“This event is specifically occurring right alongside the St. Mary’s International Festival and the event will take place at St. Mary’s Church,” Waugh added. “There will also be a bicycle drawing for a girl’s and boy’s bike. We will also have the Portsmouth Fire Department on-site with a fire truck. This is another component of Safety Town. The youth will learn about fire safety and the role of firefighters.”

Portsmouth Connex provides a series of activities throughout Portsmouth, and its surrounding communities. The activities focus on the Portsmouth Front Street Mural District area as well as city parks, key entertainment areas, historical sites, hospitals, shopping districts and other popular parts of the City.

Connex efforts were spearheaded in April, 2013 by Shawnee Recreation Trail, Inc. (SRT) in collaboration with the Scioto County Health Coalition and Portsmouth City Council.

The group also spearheaded the prop0sed development of bicycle trails in Scioto County and Portsmouth area.

Connex’s goals centered on improving the economic viability and health standards of Portsmouth.

Connex Moves will be held from 12:30-4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17. Registration will be on Market Street near St. Mary’s Church. For more information about the event, email [email protected] or visit the Portsmouth Connex Facebook page which includes information about upcoming events.
