Spring is definitely in the air, which means Farmers’ Markets are booming. King’s Daughter’s Medical Center’s Farmers’ Market begins May 17 and Main Street Portsmouth Farmers’ Market will open on May 20th. Farmers’ Markets provide a variety of fresh fruits and fresh vegetables! You can talk to local farmers to know exactly where the produce was grown, how the produce was grown, and even ask them about great recipes to prepare with the produce. Farmers are great resources and will be happy to ask answer any questions. They take excellent care of their produce so customers have the best, freshest foods. All the farms are local, which ensures farmers do not transport produce across the country like many local grocery stores may do to supply products. Farmers’ Markets are a great way to get to know your local businesses and get a great deal. Knowing where your food is coming from can give you a good sense of mind and you will also be helping out the local businesses and agricultures. You never know, the produce may have been picked this morning!
Produce that will be in season in May include asparagus, cabbage, collards, kale, mustard greens, radishes, rhubarb, spinach, strawberries, and turnip greens. In season produce means that these fruits and vegetables are at one of their peak harvest times and will taste superb. The colors of the fruits and vegetables are very attractive and eye-catching, too. Farmers may also provide samples so you can try new foods you may never have tried before. Sampling can also ensure the produce you buy may taste just like the fresh sample. Other items you may find at a farmers’ market include honey, jams or jellies, meat, cheese, eggs, pickled vegetables, and flowers. Check out your local farmers’ market soon to taste all the fresh flavors.
