A former Southern Ohio Corrections Facility (SOCF) inmate, John Moore, 48, of Cleveland, Ohio, was found guilty of felonious assault by a jury on June 5 against Corrections Officer Jeremy Conkel.

The case was heard by a Common Pleas Court Jury in the courtroom of Judge Howard H. Harcha. Harcha deliberated for more than four hours before finding the former Southern Ohio Corrections inmate guilty.

The verdict came after a three days of testimonies and arguments, and included a jury view of the scene of the assault, which occurred on the L-7 cellblock at SOCF.

During the trial, the jury deadlocked on an additional charge of attempted murder.

Judge Harcha sentenced Moore to seven additional years in prison, which will be served immediately following his current sentence imposed by the Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court.

At the time of the felonious assault, Moore was serving a sentence for aggravated robbery and kidnapping.

“This case shows the continuing commitment of our office to have the backs of the corrections office and the staff at the prison in Lucasville,” Assistant County Prosecutor Joe Hale, who prosecuted the case, said.

“I am especially grateful to SOCF Investigator Charles Miller for his assistance with the preparation for this trial.”
