Portsmouth Police Chief Robert Ware said his department is looking for two men he says may have attempted to lure a child into a vehicle.
The department is looking into a report of two unidentified white males that may have attempted to lure a 14-year-old girl into a vehicle Thursday evening. Ware said the unidentified males, believed to be in their mid 30s to 40s, were reportedly seen in a blue four-door Ford Focus. The information is that there was a handicap placard displayed in the vehicle.
The incident is said to have occurred shortly after 5 p.m., in the area of the Young Street and Vinton Avenue area. It prompted Ware to urge people, especially children, to take precautions when walking, especially during hours of darkness.
“Taking the following precautions can keep you safe,” Ware said. “Always be aware of your surroundings, never walk or jog alone, let others know where you are going and when you plan to arrive or return, walk or jog in well lit or high traffic areas as much as possible.”
Ware said you should always have a cell phone with you and if you are using ear buds, maintain a low volume so you can hear what is going on around you. He said you should never approach strangers, especially in a vehicle and always report suspicious activities to law enforcement authorities.
Ware said anyone with information about the Thursday night incident is encouraged to contact the Portsmouth Police Department at 740-353-4101 or 740-354-1600.
