On Tuesday, Fortune Magazine released the 20 best workplaces in health care, and Southern Ohio Medical Center (SOMC) ranked fifth on the national list.

According to www.fortune.com, “growth in health care has been constant-and that means there’s been an ever-growing number of jobs opening in the sector. Over the past 25 years, employment in the sector boomed from 8.2 million in 1990 to 14.8 million in 2014.”

Coming in at number one on the list is Texas Health Resources, of Arlington, Texas. They have 21,000 employees and annual revenue of $3.85 billion. The company hosts pet picture contests, ugly tie days and Easter egg hunts to keep employees connected to the heart of its mission; serving the community,” the company profile states.

On the review, one employee of SOMC was quoted as saying, “It seems that no matter where you are in the hospital, when you see an employee of SOMC, they have a smile on their face.”

Current market data suggest that SOMC holds 71.1 percent of the inpatient market share and 65.9 percent of the outpatient market share in the primary service area,” the results of the employee survey indicated.

When it comes to supporting the community, SOMC provided $350,357 in philanthropic donations. Last year SOMC employees donated more than 40,000 hours to the community through volunteering.
