Portsmouth West Middle School hosted a Career Day for students on May 19, 2017. Students met with over 38 area professionals to gain insight on specific careers. Using first-hand knowledge and experience, professionals were able to suggest career-specific classes and appropriate educational paths to help students work toward their career of interest. Grade levels were given a 45-minute timeframe in which they were free to visit each expert they were interested in seeing. Students carried with them a career questionnaire and asked each professional at least three questions.
Sheree Barnett, Portsmouth West Middle School librarian, deemed the event a success and was thankful for the community support. “Our community came together for the students here at Portsmouth West Middle School. They took their entire day to explain and contribute their knowledge to our students. The event was extraordinary and one that students talked about until the end of the year. I personally am so thankful for our giving community, the wonderful teachers I work with every day that love and support our students, and an administration that allows us to provide these opportunities to our students. I would also like to thank all the professionals for taking time out of their days for this. They made a difference in our students’ lives,” she stated.
