SOPAA and SSU announce 2017-18 season

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – The Southern Ohio Performing Arts Association (SOPAA) and Shawnee State University are pleased to announce the line-up for the upcoming 2017-18 season.

The 2017-18 season will mark twenty-two years of partnership between SOPAA and SSU that has brought exciting and intriguing performances to southern Ohio.

Subscription renewal will be available when brochures are mailed in early June. New subscriptions and single ticket purchases will begin July 10. In addition to the performances brought by SOPAA/SSU, the annual concert by the Oak Ridge Boys will also return to SSU.

The 2017-18 season line-up are as follows:

Sept. 14 – Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers. Over 50 years ago, Larry, Steve and Rudy Gatlin started their singing careers in their little home town of Abilene, Texas, and went on to make music history. The Gatlin Brothers have performed from Texas stages to the White House, from Broadway to Grammy Awards to the top of the country hit charts. To find out more, please go to and

Oct. 17 – Glenn Miller Orchestra – Glenn Miller Orchestra returns as an ever popular performance for its unique jazz sound, including memorable pieces, such as Moonlight Serenade, String of Pearls, and In the Mood. Even though Miller himself disappeared over the English Channel during World War II, his music continues to live on in its full big band danceable glory with over 300 concert dates a year all over the world. Nov. 2 – The Ohio State University Marching Band – The same band you’ve seen entering the Horseshoe in Columbus that excites a crowd of 105,000 plus people is coming to the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts! For more information, check out and

Nov. 30 – The Barefoot Movement ­– Enjoy The Barefoot Movement as part of your holiday show this year. Complete with all the classic seasonal favorites wrapped in a Christmas package, the audience will enjoy acoustic renditions of everything from Chuck Berry’s “Run, Run, Rudolph,” to Perry Como’s “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas,” and the emotional takes on more tender songs such as “O Holy Night,” and “Hark The Herald Angels Sing.” To find out more, go to and

Jan. 24 – Dirty Dancing – Exploding with heart-pounding music, passionate romance and sensational dancing, Dirty Dancing, is the live theatre adaptation of the hit movie about the burgeoning romance between Baby and Johnny. Featuring the hit songs, “Hungry Eyes,” “Hey Baby,” “Do You Love Me?” and the heart-stopping “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life.” For more information, please go to and

Feb. 12 – Sound of Music – A brand new production of The Sound of Music will be coming to the VRCFA. This Tony, Grammy and Academy Award winning musical tells the story of Maria and the Von Trapp Family. Featuring music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II with beloved songs, including “My Favorite Things,” “Do Re Mi,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “Edelweiss” and the title song. Apr. 29 – Columbus Children’s Choir and Columbus Symphony Youth Orchestra – SOPAA/SSU is thrilled to present TWO of Ohio’s premier children’s musical ensembles. Join us in a preview of their highly anticipated Carnegie Hall performance, and watch extremely talented young people thrill you in their very first visit to Scioto County as they present musical works which span genres and centuries in a family friendly event you won’t want to miss. The Oak Ridge Boys Concert will take place Dec. 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the VRCFA. Tickets will be sold separately from the subscription series. For more information, go to Tickets will go on sale at the end of August.
