It is a shame but many Christians are nearsighted, they only see what is in front of them with the eyes of the world instead of with spiritual insight. Many times they are in such a hurry to win someone they view as more important to the Lord that they only see the physical instead of the spiritual! Therefore, they see the bag lady and the beggar as obstacles in their path to someone more important. Instead of children for whom Christ has died they only see obstacles in their way to those the world deems as “prime targets”. I remember years ago when Tammy Faye Baker asked the television audience to pray that they might win and actor or an actress! I have to ask; what is the matter with winning the guy down the street or the bag lady that you pass by every day? Me thinks it was about money and notoriety rather than the soul of a lost person. Why can’t people get it in their heads that every soul is important? Did you ever ask yourself, “What does their bank account or position in this world matter at the judgment bar of God?”
Listen, we may be impressed by the way a person looks or dresses, or by some other external factor, but God is impressed and interested in the heart. He is not interested in their financial ledger or the size of their home. In First Samuel chapter 16 we see the truth to this; the prophet Samuel went to Jesse’s house to anoint Israel’s next king. When Eliab, David’s older brother, walked into the room Samuel was awe struck by his appearance and height and said, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands before me.” But the Lord said unto Samuel, “Look not on his appearance or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” And friends that is the rest of the story and that is how David became the King of Israel. Did you notice that it wasn’t anything physical; it was a spiritual inclination by our God that determined the next king of Israel!
The next time you get that nearsighted feeling remember that someone looked at you and thought that you were so important that they “entered your space” in order to make a difference in your life. In fact they thought you were so important that they shared the gospel message of the risen Savior with you. What if they would have gone to someone “more important” than you?
Now I hope and pray that after that last statement that you finally get the point. The only question that I have for you is, “What are you going to do about it?” Tomorrow, go to all the ones that you have passed by on your way to someone “more important” and tell them the old old story about Jesus and His love.
Now here is some refrigerator door wisdom from me to you. “A heart that fully trusts in the Lord will not be easily led astray!”
