You know what makes me sick? You know what makes me want to cut my hair with a weed whacker? It is the attitude of the Church today! I ask myself, “What is the matter with the Church that Jesus died for today?” The modern church and many who profess Christ are in trouble today even though few realize it. I don’t know if it is just me but there seems to be nothing sacred today. Many seem to go about their Sundays with a ho-hum attitude as they “lip sync” a prayer. Think of how many minds gather dust while the name of God is supposedly being worshipped. Many sing, “All to Jesus I surrender. All to Him I freely give,” and yet they spend the rest of the week trying to take back what they said they would give Him. What about the times the people in the pews have sung “Have thine own way, Lord…” and yet they make sure they have complete control of their lives. There are others that sing “Take my silver, take my gold, Not a mite will I withhold…” yet they only believe in one Lord one faith and one dollar! Add to that is the mindset of many who have forsaken the fear of the Almighty. Instead, God has become the “man upstairs” or the “big guy.” Brothers and sisters God is not the man upstairs or the big guy, He is holy, righteous and one who is to be worshipped!
The atmosphere in many church services is clickish, unfriendly, and lacks an outright rendering of God His due. There also seems to be a lack of expectation. What are you expecting when you attend the assembly? You should be expecting to see souls saved, lives changed and vibrant worship. But what are most who attend services on Sunday expecting? Most are expecting nothing more than getting out of there in less than 45 minutes and beating their neighbors to the local Bob Evans. Is that what worship is all about? So Jim what is missing? What is missing is the fear of God. Now fear has two sides to it and both are missing in many services. One side of fear is respect and the other is “look out for judgment.” For many congregations worship has become a performance to a human audience rather than praise to the Creator. Much of what the church calls worship has become the “American Idol” with a religious slant. The focus is directed on the “performers” rather than on the one who the church is supposed to be assembling to honor! Brothers and sisters, there is nothing wrong with songs of praise, but that praise must be directed to the One who deserves the praise!
Every Sunday people are coming to what they call “church” and going through the motions of what they call worship, mouthing words of praise, prayers and adoration to God, and yet going home unchanged. Instead of seeking to be a servant, as Jesus Christ was, they desire to be fed, burped, patted, and catered to. And for heaven’s sake don’t let the preacher say something biblical that might upset them or challenge their world view. If the Church is going to be the Church, this has to change! Listen, you were created with the capacity to know God and experience His presence and worship Him and Him only! Nothing less than God-honoring, God-exalting worship can fill the longing in your heart in order to commune with Him. Do you remember what the first commandment that God gave Israel concerning their worship to Him was? He said, “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before Me” (Exodus 20:2-3). Our worship is to be directed in the same way in the New Testament. Make God the center of your worship, in all you say and do, in and out of a church building, and with all your heart and do me a favor, start today!
Here is some refrigerator door wisdom from me to you today, “The essence of true worship is the attitude of your heart.”
