How to face life

Dr. James Spinnati

We all sometimes wonder how to face life as it instantaneously happens in our lives.

How can you handle life when your twin sister forgets your birthday or your “ship comes in” and it is the Titanic? What will your attitude be if your tax refund check bounces or as you start your morning by taking a bath you see your Ivory soap sinking to the bottom of the tub? Will you react with confidence as you wake up at six in the morning and turn your TV on and there is a diagram showing you the emergency routes out of the city?

There are many who fall apart at the first sign of a crisis. They hear a bird singing and look out their window only to discover that it is a buzzard! That “hitch in the road” has just ruined their day. How can you and I handle the difficulties of life with confidence? The following six points will help you to face life with confidence and renewed vigor.

1. Focus on God and not your circumstances.

Hebrews 12:1-2 says, “1Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Listen, maybe you can’t handle the pressure of a moment, but God can. Trust Him!

Do you remember Matthew 11:28? “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

2. Put the past behind you.

Whatever happened yesterday happened yesterday! I have heard people say, “I just want to be happy.” Yet they haven’t a clue how to obtain true happiness.

I have found in my life that happiness is an inside job. Life, real living, is the Lord living within you that is the cause for true rejoicing. I want everyone to understand that happiness is a choice not based on circumstances, but on a positive mind-set. There are so many people who miss out on happiness because they think, “I could be happy IF!!!”

Today, I want you to forget the “IF’s.” If’s are things that may never be. The “if’s in this life will deprive you and me of the here and now and the joy that the Lord desires for us to enjoy in the present.

When I think of the “if’s” I think of an old Burt Bacherach song that says, “A fool will lose tomorrow looking back on yesterday.” This is the problem that faces far too many people in our lifetime. They “camp” in the yesterdays of their life and never enjoy today.

Friends, I am convinced that happiness is possible no matter what our circumstances are. Inner peace, poise, and serenity can be ours no matter whatever the conditions are that surround us. Focusing on the past will rob you of your future!

3. Concentrate on the present!

Jesus told us about the attitude of worry in Matthew 6:31-34; “31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

Second Corinthians 5:17 tells every Christian to walk by faith; not by sight! When worry overtakes you; you are not walking by faith.

4. Remember who lives in you!

“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me” {Galatians 2:20}.

5. Live life in the “positive fast lane”!

In order to accomplish this ‘task,’ all you have to do is follow the example of the Apostle Paul in Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” Brothers and sisters; attitude determines altitude! How high are you going to fly for God?

6. Listen to God.

How are we going to accomplish this task? Read God’s love letter to you; the Bible! Remember; faith comes by hearing and hearing through the Word!
