Scifres offers more than just sewing

Once Upon a Dream Designs, owned by Serena Scifres, is a creative space that blends do-it-yourself flair with modern design.

Scifres opened for business in December of 2014, starting out in a small shop in New Boston, working solely in custom sewing. She quickly outgrew her space in New Boston, and moved into the Wheelersburg Shopping Plaza, expanding her products beyond custom clothing and sewing.

Scifres began sewing as child, but she never thought it would lead her to owning a shop of her own.

“It was something that I really wanted to do, I prayed and said ‘Lord I want to sew,’ I feel like he blessed me with it and from there the blessings just continued, I like using it to help and teach others what I have been given,” said Scifres.

The turning point in her sewing career happened after the birth of her son.

“When he was born, 28 years ago, jeans were stiff. They were not soft like they are now, I didn’t want to put those on him, he couldn’t even bend his legs. I didn’t want him to be uncomfortable and I thought, there’s got to be a better way. I decided to sew. I already had a sewing machine, he had to have clothes and they didn’t have anything for him, so I started making his clothes,” Scifres explained.

Scifres creates custom designs, including wedding and prom dresses, alterations, quilts, tutus and bows, and children’s clothing, bringing your dream designs to life.

In addition to the traditional quilts, Scifres uses her quilting skills to create new one of-a-kind products. She creates picture and memory quilts, with photos transferred onto fabric and plushy toys, including a 6 foot shark and a pterodactyl.

In addition to her own works, Once Upon a Dream Designs also serves as a learning space for new quilters. Scifres offers quilting classes and sells high-quality fabric for those already involved in the quilting community.

“I love to see people happy, when I make a dress seeing that the look on person’s face is so rewarding. I love seeing the satisfaction when I’m teaching and they see their finished product and the ‘I actually did this!’ moment. I feel so blessed and it’s truly a joy,” said Scifres.
