Waverly Post 142 Shockers fall to Athens Post 21, 3-0

Troubles continue for the Waverly Post 142 Shockers, as they fell to Athens Post 21, Thursday evening. The Shockers were held scoreless in the loss to Post 21, marking their second consecutive loss after breaking a multi-game skid earlier in the week.

Waverly Post 142 was held to only four hits Thursday, in their 3-0 shut-out loss to Athens Post 21.

“We didn’t do a good enough job of hitting with runners in scoring position,” Waverly Post 142 coach Jonathan Teeters said after the loss.

On four separate occasions, the Shockers had runners in scoring position, on second and/or third base, but were unable to get a timely hit to bring in the runner.

In the second inning, Post 142 had the bases loaded before hitting into a ground out to the pitcher, who then tossed the ball to first base, recording the final out of the inning.

The Shockers were left stranded again in the fourth inning. With runners on second and third and only one out, Athens Post 21 got a fly-ball out and then a routine grounder to the second baseman to end the inning.

During the sixth inning, Waverly Post 142 had a runner on second with one out before the next two batters were sent back to the dugout via a strikeout and a fly ball.

The curse continued in the seventh inning as well for the Shockers. With two outs and the bases loaded, Post 142 came up empty-handed again as the game was ended on a called strike three.

Despite his team’s inability to drive in runs Thursday evening, Teeters was proud of other aspects of the game, including the pitching of Trevon Burnside.

“Trevon held them in check through five innings,” Teeters said. “We just weren’t able to support him offensively.”

Burnside got the start for the Shockers, pitching five innings of work in the loss. He allowed all three runs Athens Post 21 scored in the game, which were all earned. He gave up five hits and walked three batters, while striking out four hitters.

Gavin Yazell had a relief appearance Thursday, when he took the mound in the sixth inning. He finished the night with one inning of work, allowing one hit and issuing a single walk.

Post 142 didn’t give up a big inning to Post 21, as all three runs scored came by single run innings in the first, second and third.

Drew Harris led the team in hits Thursday, as he finished the game with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, which included a double in the fourth inning.

Garrett Moore and Shawn Mersiel both picked up a hit in the game. Moore finished with a 1-for-2 plate performance, while Mersiel ended up going 1-for-3.

With the loss, the Shockers overall record fell to an even 9-9. Their Region V record remains 5-2, as the game against Post 21 was not a league game.
