July 4 festivities in surrounding area

Portsmouth Fireworks are scheduled for Monday, July 4 at 10 p.m. Doc Roc & the Remedies will open entertainment at 7 p.m. Approximately 12 vendors are expected to be on hand, provide food and beverages for purchase.

If rain occurs, the date will be rescheduled for Saturday, July 9.

South Shore, Kentucky and The American Legion Post 276 Fourth of July Bash will not only include fireworks and a parade, but will also have an added feature, the Legion Days Carnival.

Festivities will kick off Sunday, July 3, with fireworks as darkness makes its entrance at the American Legion Post 276 South Shore Drive, in South Shore. On Monday, July 4, Independence Day fun will begin with a parade at noon. Line up for the parade will be at 10:30 a.m., on East First Avenue to the American Legion Post.

Brook Haywood, president of the Women’s Auxiliary of the American Legion Post 276, said they are excited about hosting the events for the community.

“We always look forward to hosting this special event for the community,” Haywood said. “A baby contest will be held immediately following the parade for babies from zero to nine months, and cash prizes given.Portsmouth Ambulance will be present to provide free hot dogs.”

The Legion Days Carnival is set for July 7-9 at Post 276. Though no exact time is set for festivities to begin on these days, Haywood said it will definitely be evening time for each day.

“This year we have even added something more, what we are calling the Legion Days Carnival. That is going to be held July 7-9,” Haywood said.

The Legion Days event will provide rides, crafts, live music, and plenty of food that will be available for purchase. Vendors are still being accepted for the cost of $10 per day of the event. For more information, call Jenny Thomas at 606-465-1354.

In Flatwoods, Freedom Fest 2016 will consist of Contemporary, Southern Gospel, Praise and Worship, Accapella, Christian Rap and more. Donations will be collected for West Virginia flood relief efforts.

Freedom Fest attendees are asked to bring donations of canned foods, rubber gloves, cleaning supplies and pet food.

‘Genuine Remedy’ and will be on stage at 5 p.m. Contemporary, Southern Gospel, Praise and Worship, Acapella, Christian rap and more. Admission is free, donations will be accepted to be allocated towards West Virginia flood relief efforts. ‘Geunine Remedy’ will be headlining the event, and are scheduled to perform at 5 p.m.

Carla Brown, one of the coordinators of the event, said Freedom Fest is all about freedom in God.

“With God we have freedom, so we just chose to have in around the Fourth of July. We had one last year, so this will be the second one that we’ve had,” Brown said. “We can rely on him, and talk to him about anything. I believe we will have an even bigger turn out this year, as we have gotten more people involved in it.
