WAVERLY — The Waverly Post 142 Shockers will be looking to rebound after dropping both games of a double-header to Athens Post 21 Sunday afternoon, June 26, 2016.

The Shockers fell 6-1 in game one, followed by an 11-6 loss in game two.

“We are lacking mental toughness as a team right now,” Waverly Post 142 coach Jonathan Teeters said. “Not making routine plays, throwing strikes, kind of a rough patch that a lot of teams go through.”

Game one

Hayden Baker took the mound for the Shockers Sunday afternoon in game one. The Waverly Post 142 hurler went five innings in the game, allowing five total runs, while only three were earned. Athens Post 21 got five hits against Baker during his time on the mound, which saw him walk four batters and strike out five.

Jared Alley drove in the only run for the Shockers in game one, a solo home run in the third inning. Alley finished the game going 2-for-2 at the plate.

While Post 142 was only able to score once, in the third inning, Athens Post 21 outscored the Shockers by five runs. Post 21 scored two runs in the third inning, followed by one in the fifth and then finally three more in the sixth inning.

The loss sent the Shockers overall record to 8-6.

Game two

Game two of the double header added to Post 142’s woes, as they lost their second contest to Athens Post 21. The Shockers fell to Athens Post 21 in the final game of the double-header, 11-6.

Gavin Yazell and JR Noble were sent to the mound for the Shockers. Yazell pitched one and one-third innings, giving up four runs, two of which were earned and walking five batters.

Noble pitched three and two-thirds innings giving up five runs, with two being earned. Noble walked a pair of batters and struck out one.

Logan Kottenbrook led the Shockers at the plate in game two. He went 3-for-4 at the plate, driving in a pair of runs and hitting a double.

Shawn Mersiel and Brady Shoupe both had two hits in the game, as each went 2-for-4. Both also drove in a run, with Shoupe hitting a double as well.

The Shockers scored one run in the first, followed by four runs in the second inning and another run in the third. They would be held scoreless for the remainder of the game.

With the second loss, the Shockers record fell to 8-7 on the season overall. They still have a 4-1 Region V record.

Problem Solvers

Post 142 still holds on to a winning record, 8-7 which gives them a 0.533 winning percentage. However, Teeters addressed his team’s need to fix its problems.

“We’re 15 games into the season so it’s time to start tightening things up and fixing what’s wrong,” Teeters said. “We have a big week ahead with two league games so we’ll see what we’re made of and how quickly we can bounce back.”

Up Next

The Shockers will be back in action Wednesday, June 29, 2016 in Circleville, Ohio, as they take on Circleville Post 134. First pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m. at Teays Valley High School.
