McFarland advances to championship

AKRON — Mitchell McFarland, of Wheelersburg, won the Ohio Amateur Qualifying Tournament at Portage Country Club in Akron on Monday, scoring a 71.

“It was a good tournament,” said McFarland. “But, I felt like I didn’t play my best. I finished one over par so that left a sour taste in my mouth. I didn’t do as well on the last three holes, but I can’t complain much because I came out as a co-medalist.”

He scored one Eagle, three birdies, and had four bogeys with a single double bogey, shooting just one over par with a 71.

Mitchell took home top honors with Kyle Richardson, of Medina, who also scored a 71.

“My main goal was to survive and advance. I felt like I was putting really well, but my driver wasn’t fantastic. It didn’t get me in too much trouble, though.”

McFarland now moves on to the Ohio Amateur Championship in Findlay, Ohio. It will be played July 12-16. He will join 144 other top amateurs competing in the tournament.

“I’m just going to take it one shot at a time, one hole at a time, and see what happens,” McFarland said. “I know I can compete with anyone. I just have to play my game and see how it ends up.

I actually played a tournament there two years ago. My last round I shot three under, so I have a fairly good history there. I’m just working hard this summer and trying to hone my skills for the next level in Akron.”

McFarland signed on with the Akron zips to play golf in the fall of 2015. Now, the summer is all that stands in his way of his first year on campus.

“I’ve been excited to go to Akron ever since I committed with them,” McFarland said. “I can’t wait to get up there. But, at the same time, I have a busy summer ahead of me. I’m not looking ahead, I’m trying to play the best I can right now and enjoy it.”

McFarland currently works at the Elks Country Club in Mcdermott. He plans to spend the summer there, with friends, and getting in as much time on the green as he can. He has six tournaments on his calendar this summer including the Natural Resource Partners Tournament in Ashland, Kentucky.
