PWES students visit courthouse and State Park

PORTSMOUTH — Third grade students from Portsmouth West Elementary (PWES) had an eventful, innovative day with a tour of the Scioto County Courthouse and visit to Shawnee State Park Forest Tuesday.

Melanie Ogg, a third-grade teacher at PWES, was among the staff on the trip, said the students had a delightful time.

“The Portsmouth West Elementary third graders enjoyed a tour of the Scioto County Courthouse as part of their spring field trip. Students listened to Appellate Judge Marie Hoover, County Treasurer Bill Ogg, Clerk of Courts Lisa Novinger, and Danielle Parker from the Prosecutor’s Office, tell about their respective jobs while touring their offices,” Ogg said. “Judge Harcha entertained many questions from the students as well.

After departing from the court house, the group then went to the Shawnee State Park Forest for educational nature experiences with naturalist Jenny Richards and her team, for stations at the Nature Center.

“Students and teachers had a wonderful day and would like to thank the courthouse officials and state park personnel for hosting them,” Ogg said.

Judge Marie Hoover said student visitation is the PWES visitation to the Scioto County Courthouse is an important opportunity for students to experience.

“I think that it is important for students to come to the court houses, and see not just this Court, but the entire court house,” Hoover said. “The commissioners have put a lot of work into fixing the court house and making it look as good as it can look. I think that it is important for society to understand that the court house is an important place, and a lot of decisions about people’s lives are made here. So, I believe it is extremely important that the children see it, because this building is really amazing if you tour it and look around it.”

Through her interaction with the students, Hoover learned the third grade students do possess knowledge about the court system.

“I talked with them about the Appellate Court, and what I do here in conjunction with the other judges, and answered a lot of their questions,” Hoover said. “They are third graders, but I think their curriculum so much more advance that it was when I was in third grade, so they know more about the court system.”
