‘Fun Run’ for the Mighty Milers

Students at New Boston Elementary School wrapped up their Mighty Milers program on May 12 with a Fun Run.

During the school year, students in grades kindergarten through sixth, participated in the Mighty Milers program.

The program is sponsored by the New York Road Runners, it’s a free program encouraging students to participate in healthy activities.

It’s designed to get children moving and prevent obesity and illness. Participation in Mighty Milers helps kids build their self-esteem, and learn to make and reach personal goals.

“Running the miles is really fun, I like being healthy and it’s a good thing to do,” said student Josh Tabor.

Over the course of the school year, children in Mighty Milers set goals to run or walk a certain distance and earn rewards for reaching milestones along the way.

“We keep track of their miles and their goals. The students in kindergarten through second set a goal to walk 13.1 miles and third through sixth was to run 26.2 miles before the end of the school year, so a half-marathon and a full-marathon,” explained PE teacher Mary Waugh.

The students were rewarded with wristbands, t-shirts, water bottles and medals for their progress throughout the program.

“We’ve incorporated it into our PE classes, students in grades fourth through sixth can run or walk a half a mile before they go to their classrooms, and then they also got to participate in the after school program,” said Waugh.

Their goal was 6,798 miles as a school.

After totalling their miles, the students surpassed their goal. They completed over 8,200 miles.

“They were only projected to do the 6,789 miles, for them to exceed that is awesome. They love the running and they’re excited about it. I’m so proud of them,” said Waugh.

This is the second year that the school district has participated in the program, the program concludes with a one mile fun run.

The Fun Run took place in Millbrook park, the students ran or walked the course, while the teachers and high school volunteers cheered them on.

“I just really want to thank the local businesses and community sponsors for helping us. Without them, it would be impossible for us to provide the incentives and the t-shirts for the kids, these things are necessary and the kids get so excited about it,” said Waugh.
