Titans blank Vikings, 2-0

CJ Corns had the Viking batters whiffing and missing — to the tune of 15 strikeouts — Monday as Notre Dame scratched across a pair of late-inning runs to claim a 2-0 road victory over Symmes Valley.

The Vikings only managed one hit, a single, off Corns throughout the night.

“Last night’s game came down to throwing strikes and CJ corns was very effective all night, he kept batters off balance all night,” Titans manager Drew Mader said.

Notre Dame (7-4, 5-0) winners of seven straight games struggled at the plate, striking out 11 times while leaving 13 base runners stranded.

“We struggled a bit early in the game to get the bat on the ball, but in the fifth inning we started to come around and put together some timely hitting.”

Drew Cassidy was the first Titan batter to deliver in the clutch. Two batters ahead of Cassidy, Truman Hash reached base after the third strike found its way to the backstop.

Cassidy made Symmes Valley pay for the mistake has he found a gap in the outfield, which allowed Hash to score the game-winning run from first.

In the seventh inning, the Titans scored an insurance run after Billy Book drew a bases-loaded walk, which scored Tyler Speas.

” … I’m just glad we were able to string together a few hits and be disciplined at the plate to get the runs needed,” Mader said.

Symmes Valley and Notre Dame will meet again Wednesday in Portsmouth.

“We have them again Wednesday and expect them to compete the entire game, our kids are up to the challenge they face this week and hope to continue our success,” Mader said.
