The Lawrence-Scioto County Solid Waste Management District (SWD) in conjunction with the Scioto County Sheriff Marty Donini will hold a drug take back day on April 15.
The event will be held at the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office, 1025 Sixteenth Street in Portsmouth from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., officials said.
Dan Palmer Director of the SWD said a number of items will be collected at the event, including liquid medications, sharps and pills.
Palmer said Southern Ohio Medical Center (SOMC) will provide containers, for proper disposal of needles.
“I want to thank Sheriff Donini for allowing us to have this event on his parking lot. It’s a good location to have this event,” Palmer said.
He said over the last couple of weeks there has been a number of people calling the district asking about the event.
Palmer said some have expressed concerns over names being left on bottles.
“People do not have to worry about their names on bottles. If they don’t want to bring their bottles, put them in a zip lock bag,” Palmer said.
He said the medication can be mixed and all bottles will be properly disposed of along with everything else collected.
He said participants will not have to leave their car; officials with the event will be on hand to gather items to be disposed of.
“People can pull up and no name or information will be collected,” Palmer said. He said proof residency for Scioto County will be required for those dropping items off.
“This is a good way to properly dispose of the medications,” Palmer said.
Through a partnership between The Ohio Attorney General’s Office, Ohio Department of Health and the Drug Free Action Alliance collection bins have been provided to law enforcement agencies in Ohio. The drop boxes are mailbox-style disposal bins that can be placed inside law enforcement agencies to be used by residents during normal business hours.
Locally bins are located at the Portsmouth Police Department, Scioto County Sheriff’s Office and the Shawnee State University Department of Public Safety.
Palmer said in 2015 the event had a record of 73 vehicles, 90 pounds of pills, 55 pounds of needles and 25 pounds of liquid medications.
“We collected a wide variety of stuff, it was amazing,” Palmer said.
The Lawrence Scioto Solid Waste Management District has been holding drug take back days since 2007.
“I think this provides a great avenue for people to properly dispose of their pills and liquid medications,” Palmer said.
