Emergency medical service (EMS) members and local firefighters were afforded the opportunity to participate in the 8th Annual Tri-State Education Conference, April 9.

The event was held in the Clark Memorial Library on the Shawnee State University Campus.

Hosted by HealthNet Aeromedical Services and MedFlight of Ohio, EMS workers, nurses, firefighters, and other medical professionals received free educational courses, continuing their education in their fields.

“This the eighth year, and it just grows in numbers each year. The fire training is different every year, along with the speakers,” said HealthNet representative, Veronica Neale.

The morning kicked off with a continental breakfast and a lecture given by Corporal Willis G. Hash III from the West Virginia State Police department. Hash discussed the dangerous of workplace complacency in the line of emergency service work.

Medical professionals also heard from Robert Cornwell, Michael Smith, Rod Blair, Dr. Eduardo Pino, Dr. Michael Peterson, and Dr. M Shay O’Mara from Grant Medical Center.

Despite the cold, fire fighting teams spent the day in an outdoor training session.

Fire fighters participated in three activities, water supply, water movement and pump operations.

“It’s important for volunteer firemen to know how to run the pumps on the trucks, and also how to manage their water movement so when they get out really far and there aren’t any hydrants, they’ll be ready to respond and know what to do,” said MedFlight representative Amanda Ball.

They also attended a lectures about proper nutrition for firefighters, given by Ashley Schwamberger, an EMT and a member of the Portsmouth Fire Department and learned the importance of fitness from Portsmouth Fire Department’s Lt. Jared Canter, who is also a Crossfit Instructor.

In addition to training activities, special displays were set up. Dan Gilmore, brought a 1973 original Horton Ambulance, set up just like it was in the 70’s, providing health care professionals the opportunity to see just how far our technologies have advanced.

Robert Cornwell also set up a “Tools for Emergency” display.

Typically, MedFlight and HealthNet land a co-owned helicopter on Third Street behind the Library. Due to the snowy conditions, it was in the best interest of the crew to cancel, but that did not stop everyone from having a good time.

“This community is always so appreciative of this conference and they’re eager about continuing their education, it’s always a blast,” said Neale.
