PORTSMOUTH — For a family-friendly day, look no further than Portsmouth Elementary School’s Spring Bazaar and Carnival this Saturday, April 2.

Starting at 9 a.m., the community is invited to shop and play. There will be plenty of activities for the young, the old and those in-between.

There is no cost for admission and all proceeds from the event support the Positive Behavior Committee and the Right to Read Week.

“The Positive Behavior Committee rewards students for displaying great behavior, we take them to the movies, we have extra recess, we have Trojan Bucks that we hand out for the kids who display good behavior and we call winners every day. The winners get to come down to the office and pick out a prize from the Trojan treasure chest, we try to encourage them to keep up the good work,” said Principal Beth Born.

Right to Read Week celebrates the ability to read, the staff use creative ideas to show students that reading can be fun.

“Typically it revolves around a theme, this year the theme is Disney, every day we get on the intercom and play a Disney song. When the students hear the song, everyone stops what they’re doing, and they pull out their book to read. The assistant principal and I walk around and catch them reading, and they get a ticket that they can use in the carnival,” said Born.

There will be inflatables, face-painting, pictures with Disney characters, carnival games and opportunities for kids to win fun prizes. The first 50 children will receive a free gently used book. Carnival tickets are available at 4 for $1.

While the kids are at play, parents can shop the booths at the bazaar.

Vendors like, Thirty-One, Thrive/Le-Vel, Locally Crafted Soap and Lotions, Hair bows, Jewelry and many more vendors will be set up to sell their products.

There will be raffles for prize baskets, concessions and food provided by Portsmouth Ambulance and live entertainment.

At 10 a.m., the Trojan Express Choir will be singing, followed by the performing arts group, Cirque D’Art at 12:30.

At 4 p.m., Rhythm and Rhinestones Dance Studio will be performing to songs from “The Lion King.”

After the bazaar, visitors can attend the Portsmouth High School Vocal Music Department performance of Aida, starting at 7:30 p.m. To purchase tickets, call 740-355-4464.

“It is going to be a really fun for the community, and we’re really excited to see the turnout,” said Born.
