Memorial Day preparations underway

It really isn’t too early to make plans for Memorial Day.

Donna Lewis, president of the Ladies Auxiliary at James Dickey Post 23 of the American Legion, and special events chairperson (the ladies in white), has been busy getting all the components to the day’s activities in order.

“Memorial Day preparations are in the works at this time,” Lewis said. “There will be a parade and if you wish to be in the parade the Veterans Service Office has the applications.”

Memorial Day, so that you can mark your calendar, is May 30 and the committee has a full slate of activities planned.

“After the parade we usually have a bean dinner at the Post (23),” Lewis said. “Directly after the services at the (Greenlawn) Cemetery, we go down to the river and do the Lost at Sea ceremony.”

Lewis said in some years past, the Lost at Sea ceremony took place at 3 p.m., but the decision was made last year to go directly to the river for that event following the ceremony at Greenlawn. That will be followed by the Firefighters Memorial at the Central Fire Station on Gallia Street at 2 p.m.

The day’s activities will begin with the POW-MIA Memorial Services in Tracy Park at 9 a.m. by the Scioto County Veterans Association.

At 10 a.m. the parade will form at Tracy Park and will go south on Chillicothe Street, east on Gallia Street and north on Offnere Street to Greenlawn Cemetery. Rich Saddler, president of the Memorial Day Association said they are asking participants in the parade to be there at 9 a.m. to begin the process of lining up. Saddler said the group has opened up the parade to any entity that wanted to be in the parade.

The Memorial Day Services at Greenlawn Cemetery will begin at 11:15 a.m.

Lewis issued a plea for more people to turn out to witness the Memorial Day parade.

“Our parade has really gone down hill,” Lewis said. “Everybody in the outlying areas have their own now. When I was in school the Memorial Day parade was huge. We’re trying to get more people to be involved – to get in the parade – it’s an important day.”

Closer to the day of the event, the committee will announce the name of the speaker at Greenlawn Cemetery, as well as the parade marshals.
