Two people required transport to a medical facility Thursday morning following a home invasion.
The person charged with breaking into a home on Harding Avenue, is Gabe McCarty, 39, of Wheelersburg, who was flown by helicopter to St. Mary’s Hospital Trauma Center in Huntington, West Virginia. The other injured party, Aaron Bradley was also air-lifted to St. Mary’s.
Portsmouth Police Operations Captain Lynn Brewer told the Daily Times, Thursday at about 8:30 a.m. officers of the Portsmouth Police Department responded to a call of a subject entering the First Stop Market in Sciotoville, Ohio, bleeding heavily. While en route to the call officers received a second call that the subject had been stabbed and employees had locked the store down.
At about the time officers arrived at the First Stop Market, Brewer said they received a second call that a Gabe McCarty had broken into a house at 1011 Harding Avenue and had beaten the residents there with a crow bar. One of the residents had been able to get to a knife and had stabbed McCarty twice forcing him to abandon the assault and flee the residence.
Officers quickly identified the subject inside First Stop as McCarty. McCarty was bleeding heavily from two stab wounds and medical personnel from Portsmouth Ambulance called for a helicopter to fly McCarty to a trauma center. McCarty was transported by Portsmouth Ambulance to the Med Flight helicopter pad on 11th Street where he was then flown to St. Mary’ s Hospital Trauma Center in Huntington, West Virginia.
Upon receiving the call from 1011 Harding Avenue additional police officers and medical personnel, responded to that residence. Diana Bradley who lives at that location told Officers that Gabe McCarty broke the window out of the front door of her residence and climbed through the window into the residence. He was confronted by Diana’s son Aaron Bradley, who also lives at that address.
The report said McCarty began hitting Aaron Bradley with a crowbar and the two began to fight. Brewer said Diana Bradley attempted to help her son and was struck by McCarty during the struggle. Aaron Bradley managed to get a hold of a large knife and stabbed McCarty twice causing him to abandon the assault and flee the residence.
Medical personnel from Portsmouth Ambulance requested additional helicopters to transport the Bradley’s to the hospital. Diana Bradley declined to be taken to the hospital and was treated for her injuries by on scene personnel.
Aaron Bradley was flown to St. Mary’s Hospital Trauma Center by St. Mary’s medical helicopter.
Both men remain in the hospital in serious condition and their treatment is continuing.
Portsmouth Police Detective’s processed a vehicle on the parking lot of the First Stop Market that McCarty was reported to have been driving. The vehicle was the subject of an earlier press release from the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office where the vehicle was reported as stolen and McCarty was reported to have been driving it. McCarty is the subject of a Sheriff’s Office investigation into several home burglaries that involved the thefts of firearms and numerous other items.
The burglary on Harding Avenue Thursday morning is being investigated by Detective Steve Brewer and Detective Chuck Crapyou of the Portsmouth Police Department. Once the investigation is completed, it is expected that the case will be presented to the Scioto County grand jury for consideration of multiple charges to be brought against McCarty.
