MCDERRMOTT — The Tigers’ woes spilled over from the regular season and haunted them during their tournament game Wednesday night.
The end result was a 85-41 loss to the sixth-seeded Western Indians in the Division IV Sectional Semifinal round.
Tigers head coach Scott Jenkins said the game was a summary of what led to a 2-15 regular season and a No. 15 seed in the tournament.
“We’re just disappointed tonight because we pretty much laid an egg,” Jenkins said. “We didn’t do a good job of running our offense and finishing shots. We didn’t do a good job of getting out and contesting the three, getting the rebound. We came out and got a lead toward the end of the first quarter, but just like our season, the next four or five minutes we just cannot put the ball in the basket.
“I think that was sort of a microcosm of how the season’s went. It’s just frustrating that you get some shots by the basket and the ball doesn’t go in.”
Jenkins acknowledged that his team left some wins on the table this season but next year could be a different story if his team has the right mind set.
“They’ve got to regroup and they’ve got to figure out now that we’ve got to get stronger, we’ve got to get quicker, we’ve got to get faster, we’ve got to get more consistent,” Jenkins said. “Obviously they are guys that have two full years of varsity experience, now they’ve got to step up and play.
“I think that’s the bottom line where our young kids are right now. We had a handful of games that could’ve easily went our way this year. I think when those went against us and you’re having a difficult time fighting out of that trend, this kind of stuff happens because in their minds, here we go again.”
With a young nucleus returning, New Boston has the pieces in place to build a winning program but according to Jenkins, the work ethic his players decide to embrace during the summer will be an indication of how next season will fare.
“The young kids have to come back in here, work hard in the offseason and work hard to get better,” Jenkins said. “This whole season, we were expecting a lot of things out of three sophomores and a freshman. They just need to step it up, work harder, get after it and get ready to win.”
New Boston will lose Ethan Porter, Austin Litz and Edward McGahan to graduation.
“They always gave hard effort, worked hard every night,” Jenkins said. “They came in and did the things we asked them to do. At times, they had some really good spots out on the court and played pretty well for us.”
